Tamasha Review – No Spoilers

Main aaj bhi wahi kar raha hoon jo main bachpan se karta aa raha hoon – mask pehenta hoon.

Tamasha is a movie about the romance of two young Indians while on vacation in Corsica, France, and the struggles they face afterwards. Let me correct myself—it’s actually not just a movie, it’s a mirror to society and modern life. Imtiaz Ali has created a masterpiece here, one that will be studied for generations. Every time someone new picks up this film to watch, it’s a win for the dreamers.

IMDB Rating: 7.4 (35K)

Why You Shouldn’t Watch

Tamasha is a musical drama. There are moments where the protagonist, Ved, absolutely goes berserk with role-play in real situations—he dances like a maniac, acts like a child, and slips into comic eccentricities. So if you’re a serious viewer who doesn’t like drama and wants to get straight to the crux without the playful detours, then this film is not for you.

Why You Should Watch

The plot starts with a bang—romance, drama, separation. It moves rapidly at first, then slows down to give you space to absorb Ved’s inner and outer battles. Just when you think you have the film figured out, it surprises you with a drastic character transformation that changes the rhythm completely.

The way Tamasha celebrates freedom, the ability to dream, and individual personality makes it a banner-holder in the battle against a money-minded, capitalist society. The characters, dialogues, settings are designed to influence you to break inner chains and explore.

The beauty of Tamasha is in the story of Ved. It’s an attractive yet faulty character which makes it so relatable. Ved’’s perspective and journey mirrors the inner world of many of us. Sometimes you’d be seeing yourself in Ved’s mirror.

Imtiaz Ali is a mastermind. From the locations to shot angles, from costumes to character backstories are picked with intention and meaning. Even the music has inner meanings and the lyrics are intentional. It would take at least a couple of YouTube videos to decode the small details, but it would be worthwhile. You could be unfolding new mysteries every time you listen or watch them.

We must also highlight the outstanding performances of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Tamasha proves why these two are masters of their craft. Ved is not an easy character, yet Ranbir makes him so fun, human, and digestible that even a teenager could grasp the film’s deeper themes.

Writer’s Advice

Tamasha presents larger-than-life philosophies in such a light way that it feels like drinking a refreshing soda on a hot summer afternoon. It’s entertaining yet educational. You just need to keep your heart open to fully grasp it.

Think of it as a delightful meal, but one that’s different from your everyday plate. To enjoy it, you must detach from your own situations. This isn’t a blueprint for life or a real solution—real life is far harsher. Just take it as it is: a story. If the lessons are strong enough, they’ll find you—you don’t have to chase them.

Best Time to Watch Tamasha

You should watch Tamasha is on a Friday evening, when you’ve just come home from work and want to start your weekend with a meaningful yet entertaining film.
